Since their inception in 1999, K12 has been busy helping kids get educated. They are the top provider of online educational programs in the United States for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. The private school and public school districts they serve in 29 states (and growing) have been relying on their technology to deliver educational content across hundreds of websites.
These virtual schools -- which offer proprietary curricula -- each feature unique branding and content that’s catered to their specific audiences (kids, parents, teachers, decision-makers, and advocates).
To help K12 focus their important energies on curriculum development and the technology for delivering those educational services, we built a Drupal platform that could easily handle more quick releases of individual websites for new school or district.
“The K12 folks were devoting a lot of time and resources to designing and launching these virtual schools online,” Joema Scott, project manager explained. “They didn’t need to do that -- we could create a platform that could handle it for them. So we did.”
We helped them to achieve this more scalable, long-term solution by building a robust publishing platform using Drupal. We implemented a virtual site platform that integrates with shared content repositories on the back-end. It also includes, from a design standpoint, a suite of visual themes that administrators can “plug in” with the click of a button, then customize more fully for each customer in a matter of minutes.
“With the virtualization engine we developed,” said Joema, “K12 can now stand up new school websites in a single day. That’s how simple we’ve made the publishing process.”
Today, literally in a matter of hours, K12 can roll out new websites for customers. Plus, K12 is able to focus on developing programs that continue to further student educational outcomes via participating school districts, engaged parents, and active teachers across the country.
